Specialty Packaging Solutions
When standard corrugated won't cut it, our specialty boxes are designed for the unique demands of specific industries — from wax-coated produce containers to insulated cold-chain packaging and heavy-duty industrial crates.

Wax-Coated Boxes
Wax-coated corrugated boxes are impregnated or curtain-coated with a paraffin wax layer that creates a moisture barrier on all surfaces. This treatment prevents the corrugated fibers from absorbing water, maintaining structural integrity in wet or high-humidity environments.
Wax boxes are commonly used with direct ice contact, where standard corrugated would collapse within hours. The wax coating also provides a sanitary barrier that meets FDA food contact requirements. Available in standard produce sizes (1/2 bushel, bushel, banana box) and custom dimensions.
Note: Important: Wax-coated boxes are not recyclable through standard paper recycling streams due to the wax content. However, they can be reused multiple times in their intended application, and specialized recyclers can process them.
Applications
- +Fresh produce — lettuce, berries, tomatoes, peppers
- +Seafood — fresh fish, shrimp, shellfish, oysters
- +Meat processing and poultry packing
- +Floral and nursery stock shipping
- +Ice-packed perishable goods
Insulated Boxes
Insulated corrugated boxes feature foam panels (EPS or polyurethane) laminated to the interior walls, creating a thermal barrier that maintains internal temperatures during transit. Some designs use reflective foil liners instead of or in addition to foam for radiant heat protection.
Insulated boxes can maintain cold-chain temperatures for 24-72 hours when paired with gel packs or dry ice, depending on wall thickness and ambient conditions. Standard configurations include 1", 1.5", and 2" foam panels. We carry both new insulated boxes for strict cold-chain compliance and gently used options for cost-sensitive applications.
Note: We can source insulated packaging validated for specific temperature ranges and transit durations. Contact us with your cold-chain requirements for a tailored solution.
Applications
- +Pharmaceutical shipments (2-8°C controlled)
- +Frozen and refrigerated food delivery
- +Meal kit and direct-to-consumer grocery
- +Biological specimens and lab samples
- +Temperature-sensitive chemicals
Heavy-Duty Industrial Boxes
Engineered for the most demanding packaging applications, heavy-duty industrial boxes use triple-wall or reinforced double-wall corrugated board with edge protectors, internal bracing, or wood cleating built into the design. These boxes are designed to replace wooden crates at a fraction of the weight and cost.
Heavy-duty boxes can support loads exceeding 500 lbs with proper palletization. Many designs include integrated pallet bases, foam cushioning inserts, and humidity-barrier liners. Unlike wooden crates, corrugated heavy-duty boxes do not require ISPM-15 heat treatment for international shipping, saving time and cost on export shipments.
Note: Our heavy-duty boxes are available with custom foam die-cut inserts for precision fit and maximum protection of high-value components.
Applications
- +Machine parts and heavy metal components
- +Automotive engines, transmissions, and assemblies
- +Aerospace components
- +Industrial pumps, valves, and motors
- +Military and government surplus equipment
Die-Cut Boxes
Die-cut boxes are precision-manufactured using steel rule dies that cut and score the corrugated board into exact shapes. This process enables designs that are impossible with standard slotted containers — including self-locking tabs, integrated dividers, display windows, tuck-top closures, and complex fold patterns.
Die-cut boxes offer a premium presentation without the cost of rigid packaging. They eliminate the need for tape in many applications thanks to locking tab designs. E-flute and B-flute boards are the most common substrates for die-cut boxes due to their smooth printing surfaces and clean fold lines.
Note: Used die-cut boxes are available when inventory allows, typically in standard mailer and tray sizes. Custom die-cut designs require a one-time die charge and minimum order quantities.
Applications
- +Retail-ready packaging and shelf displays
- +E-commerce mailer boxes with branded unboxing
- +Multi-compartment product packaging
- +Point-of-sale displays and counter units
- +Product-specific protective packaging
Custom Printed Boxes
Custom printed corrugated boxes feature your branding, product information, handling instructions, and regulatory marks directly on the box surface. Printing methods range from simple single-color flexographic printing to full-color digital and lithographic lamination for photographic quality.
Flexographic printing is the most cost-effective option for high-volume runs (1,000+ units) with 1-3 colors. Digital printing is ideal for short runs (50-500 units) and full-color designs without plate charges. Lithographic lamination provides the highest print quality for premium retail packaging.
Note: Custom printed boxes are available as new production only. Minimum orders and lead times vary by print method — contact us for specifics on your project.
Applications
- +Brand-consistent shipping and retail packaging
- +Subscription box programs
- +Product launches and seasonal campaigns
- +Regulatory compliance labeling (hazmat, pharma)
- +Food packaging with nutritional and ingredient panels
Produce Boxes
Purpose-built corrugated containers designed specifically for the harvest, packing, transportation, and retail display of fresh fruits and vegetables. Produce boxes feature ventilation patterns, hand holes for carrying, stackable designs, and optional wax or moisture-resistant coatings.
Standard produce box sizes are established by commodity — potato boxes, apple trays, berry flats, and lettuce cartons all have industry-standard dimensions that integrate with existing packing line equipment and retail display systems. We carry the most common produce box styles in both new and used condition, with peak availability during the Idaho growing season.
Note: Used produce boxes are an excellent value for Idaho farms. Boxes from previous seasons are structurally sound and significantly less expensive than new. Contact us for seasonal availability and volume pricing.
Applications
- +Idaho potatoes and onions
- +Apples, cherries, and stone fruit
- +Leafy greens and herbs
- +Root vegetables and squash
- +Farmers market display containers

Why Buy Specialty Boxes from Boise Boxes?
Expert Guidance
Specialty packaging requires knowledge of material science, regulatory compliance, and application-specific engineering. Our team helps you select the right solution based on your product, not just your budget.
Used Options Save More
Many specialty boxes — especially wax-coated, produce, and heavy-duty types — have significant reuse potential. Buying used specialty boxes can save 40-60% compared to new, with minimal performance trade-off.
Local Idaho Inventory
We source specialty boxes from Idaho agricultural operations, food processors, and manufacturers. This local supply chain means faster availability and lower freight costs than ordering from out-of-state suppliers.
Small Quantity Friendly
Unlike specialty box manufacturers that require minimum orders of 500-5,000 units, we sell used specialty boxes with no minimums. Buy exactly what you need, when you need it.
Quality Inspected
Every used specialty box is inspected for coating integrity, insulation effectiveness, structural soundness, and cleanliness before being offered for sale. Our grading system ensures you know exactly what you are getting.
Sustainable Choice
Reusing a wax-coated box that still has a functional moisture barrier is far more environmentally responsible than recycling it (which requires specialized processing) or sending it to landfill.
